IN the months that Leo spent at Tours, he realized many things. This was not the quiet island of Martinique. The French people were undergoing a change, and Leo felt it was not for the better. The Revolution that ushered in an era of anarchy had had serious repercussions on the morality of the common people. Leo was particularly distressed with and angered by the sounds of cursing and blasphemy he heard on all sides.

As for boxing the ears of an occasional offender, Leo realized all too well that this was not a very effective or adequate remedy. There was something he had been wanting to do for some time; he could pray more, he could, like the priests, begin to recite the Divine Office daily. When Leo mentioned his resolution to Father Colombier, the priest approved it heartily. The Divine Office was the great prayer of the Church, he told him, and Leo could do nothing higher than to give himself over to the daily recitation of the Breviary.
